Pieces of net, fishing traps, anchors and other waste pollute a good number of diving sites in Saint-Martin. A small group of divers mobilized to clean up the different sites.

"Underwater waste can make diving sites dangerous," explains Philippe Jourdain, diving instructor and manager of the Blue Odyssey Diving center at Nettle Bay, initiator of this cleaning campaign in the French part, outside the Nature Reserve. With a few friends, he decided to do one dive per month to secure the sites and thus enhance the seabed. On June 20, his group made their first dive on the wreck of the Renée, located 42 meters, opposite the Baie aux Prunes. On this occasion, kilos of trash were brought to the surface. "We want to challenge the population on the importance of protecting the environment," he adds. To participate in the second cleaning operation, which will take place around July 20, please contact Philippe on 06 90 64 35 87.
