0

As every year, the island's elected representatives and representatives of the government of Sint Maarten gathered in Grand-Case to celebrate the traditional annual festival of Victor Schœlcher.

During the official ceremony, it was Patricia Chance, the president of the Grand-Case neighborhood council, who opened the series of speeches, highlighting the tourist beauty of the village, and its gastronomy. She took the opportunity to take stock of the difficulties encountered by the inhabitants of the area. As for the president of the Collectivity Aline Hanson, she praised the various achievements of the State in Grand-Case during her mandate (slaughterhouse, school complex, etc.). According to her, Grand-Case is the essential industrial and commercial lung of the French part. She asks the restaurant owners of the village square to make a symbolic gesture for the coming tourist season by integrating at least one young person trained at the versatile high school of the Northern Islands in their establishments. The president took the opportunity to appeal to the civic spirit of all the citizens of the island for the various projects of general interest of the COM. For the deputy Daniel Gibbs, the village festival is an essential event because it contains the very essence of the spirit of Saint Martin, a date that recalls the past and the identity of Saint Martin. The first participation of the prefect Anne Laubies in this celebration was marked by a bath of history, which will have made it possible to highlight the struggle of the great Victor Schœlcher for the abolition of slavery in the French colonies. According to her, we must continue this fight because on the other side of the world, human trafficking still exists in other forms. _KL
