GOLF: SAINT-MARTIN WINS WITH BRIO THE “CONCORDIA CUP” 2021

The selection of Golfers  “Tamarins” won the traditional “Concordia Cup” last weekend against the St Maarten Golf Association (SMGA).

This match-play competition (1 point per hole won) by team and individually, sees each year the golfers of the French side compete against those of the Dutch side in the period of November 11, which is also the day of the feast of Saint-Martin / Sint Maarten and the Treaty of Concordia. This year the date was set for November 20 and 21.

Last Saturday at 8 a.m., 36 players in total set off in shot guns on the lush green fairways of Mullet Bay as a team  “2 against 2” for 9 matches in a four-ball formula. Around noon the results fell: 12 to 6 for Saint-Martin who started the competition strongly.

Then it was time to regain strength with a delicious meal offered by the Sint Maarten Tourist Office, which this year sponsored the event. Around 12:45 p.m. the players left for 18 holes still in 2 against 2 but this time in formula  "Foursome": the 2 players hit the same ball alternately until the end of the hole, a very delicate operation. On arrival, the  "Tamarins" increased their lead with the identical score of 6 to 3 which gave them a total of 12 to 6 for the first day.

The next day to win, the selection of Sint Maarten had to win 12 of the 18 individual matches and share a thirteenth game to hope to win by the minimum score of 18,5 to 17,5. A very difficult task.

Unfortunately for our friends from Sint Maarten, this did not happen, our Tamarins winning the individual matches this Sunday by a score of 12 to 6.

Final score of the Concordia Cup 2021: 24 to 12 for Saint-Martin who won for the 3rd consecutive year this beautiful competition based under the sign of friendship and conviviality despite our difference in language and origins (Editor's note: multiple , which makes the originality of our island).

The Concordia Cup Trophy  “Jason Nyuiadzi” was presented by May Ling Chun, Director of Tourism, Government of St. Maarten to the Saint-Martin team.

The Association of Tamarins thanks the Tourist Office of Sint Maarten, the SMGA for the organization, Mullet Golf Course and its staff and the Cabinet François Anton for the supply of polo shirts to the players of Saint-Martin, the balls and the goodies .

Next golf meeting on Saturday 11 December, with the unmissable SMGA Christmas scramble and its Santa Claus costume contest and cart decorations. More info on golf in Saint-Martin: golftamarinsxm@gmail.com
