A dream set was offered to us for the 100th edition of the French Open this weekend, featuring Rory McIlroy, former world No. 1 for 2 years, in the company of around thirty members of the world top 100 including Danny Willett, the recent winner of the Augusta Masters. This year it was rainy and windy weather that raged for 4 days on the National golf course in St-Quentin-en-Yvelines (77).
This did not stop the public from traveling en masse for this fabulous show, since attendance exceeded all records.
French favorite Victor Dubuisson, despite public support, completely missed his French Open where he intended to score points for a new selection in the European Ryder Cup team which will face the USA in September in Hazeltine ( Minnesota). He narrowly passed the cut but returned a card of 82 on Saturday and finished last of the weekend. Another surprise came from Danny Willett who missed the cut by 2 shots.
We were able to admire fantastic golf shots during the weekend, including a return to hole 18, the most difficult par 4 of the course, carried out by Englishman Andy Sullivan (eagle).
And at the finish on Sunday after the 4 laps, the Golf National applauded the final victory of Thongchaï Jaidee, the experienced Thai from 46 years old, with a score of -11 ahead of F.Molinari (-7) and McIlroy (-6).
On the French side, the young Matthieu Decottignies-Lafon, 23, for his first professional tournament at this level, achieved an exceptional French Open and finished 16th in the par after having been Saturday among the contenders for the final victory. He finished best French with Quesne in front of Levy, Havret, Bourdy, Wattel and others. There is no doubt that we will hear again very quickly about this long, very gifted hitter, also in the game.
