Waste management: What is the new Verde SXM project (1/2)

0

For more than 13 years, the Verde SXM company has been managing all the waste from the French part of the ecosite in Grandes Cayes. It treats household waste, recycles and recovers recyclable waste.

Part of this revaluation is carried out on site. As for the waste that cannot be recycled, it is buried in a storage facility for non-hazardous waste (ISDND) which is soon reaching saturation point. The Verde SXM company also wanted to set up another system to manage this waste that cannot be sorted, the PI project. “It will make it possible to divert this waste from landfill. These will be sterilized and transformed on site into dry and clean material, called solid recovered fuel (SRF). CSR will be heated (gasified) at low temperatures to produce electricity and heat,” says Verde.

This is an “innovative process”. Everything will take place under a shed which will not be visible from the houses. “The operating noises or the vibrations of the installation will not be perceptible by the neighborhood, sufficiently far away”, assures the company which also specifies that the flow of trucks around the site will not be increased. “It will be the same incoming tonnage as today but treated differently,” she explains.

“Dividing by 10 the dumping of waste, the PI project will reduce potential water, air or soil pollution linked to the latter. It will make it possible to contribute to the energy autonomy of the island and to introduce green energy into the energy mix of Saint-Martin”, agrees Verde.

In order to carry out this project, the company must apply for an environmental permit. In this context, a public inquiry is organized. It is currently in progress. The population can submit their observations to the prefecture until July 28.
