Davis Cup: Secretary of State for Sports Thierry Braillard said yesterday that the Guadeloupe regional council has given its agreement to host the meeting of the first round of Davis Cup in early March. A great first which had been questioned for reasons of cost.

Guadeloupe will welcome the French Davis Cup team. Thierry Braillard, Secretary of State for Sports, confirmed yesterday that the meeting between the Blues in Canada would be the first game of the competition played in the Antilles. The decision to bring the Davis Cup to Guadeloupe had been questioned in recent days, the new executive of the region worried about the cost, largely revalued upward, of the operation.

The new president of the Guadeloupe Region, Ary Chalus, had expressed reluctance on Friday against the cost of the event which he estimated at 4,5 million euros against 1,5 million estimated by the French Tennis Federation (with a million charged to the region). To convince him to maintain a project put together by the outgoing executive, he had to put his hand in his pocket. According to Thierry Braillard, the State is committed to participate financially in the renovation of the Amédée-Détraux velodrome in Baie-Mahault, in the agglomeration of Pointe-à-Pitre. _AF
