The traditional festival of Grand Case also commemorates the birth of Victor Schoelcher (July 22, 1804), a politician who worked for the abolition of slavery.

After attending an ecumenical ceremony at the Ste Marie Star of the Sea Catholic Church, on Saturday morning July 21, elected officials and officials went up the Boulevard de Grand Case. They then attended the parade of majorettes and dancers from the folk group, followed by the 90 scouts and guides from France. Then, under a tent erected for the occasion on the sports field, Patricia Chance Duzant, representative of the district council, Jean-Raymond Benjamin, territorial councilor, Daniel Gibbs, president of the COM, Senator Guillaume Arnell, MP Claire Guion-Firmin, and the prefect Sylvie Feucher followed one another at the desk to pay homage to the abolitionist and celebrate Grand Case and its traditions. Daniel Gibbs took the opportunity to announce, concerning the Boulevard de Grand Case dug to bury EDF cables, that the blueprints for the installation of fiber have been provided by the operators and that work will begin this month. He committed to temporarily lining the track for the next tourist season which will then be regrooved to renovate the water and sanitation distribution network in spring 2019 "We cannot bury dry and wet at the same time" he explained.

The festivities and musical entertainment continued throughout the afternoon and evening.
