A KPSM inspector shot and seriously injured an armed robber Monday night in Simpson Bay after witnessing a robbery in progress.
The incident occurred around 21:15 p.m. when a police officer noticed two men dressed entirely in black threatening a cashier at a supermarket with a gun. The business, which is owned by people of Asian descent, is located about 200 yards from the entrance to the Pelican Key neighborhood.
After noticing the theft, the detective immediately called Central Dispatch to report the crime. He quickly exited his vehicle and approached the scene, confronting the two thieves.
Despite being ordered to drop their weapons, the suspects refused to comply. One of the robbers was shot by the officer and fell to the ground, while the second suspect fled toward Pelican Key, up Billy Folly Road.
A KPSM patrol unit arrived shortly after and launched a search for the fleeing suspect, to no avail.
The injured suspect was transported to Sint Maarten Medical Center in critical condition. Police have cordoned off the area to conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the shooting. The investigation is ongoing and police urge anyone with information about the fleeing suspect to contact authorities immediately. _AF
