Event: “Girls in Aviation Day”: promoting careers in aviation to young girls!

0

Twenty 11-year-old girls, educated at the Dr Martin Luther King Jr. school in the Dutch part, were able to discover the different aviation professions last Friday thanks to the "Girls in Aviation Day" event. sponsored by the "Women in Aviation International" association and organized within the company  HeliRiviera aviation center located at Grand-Case airport.

Introducing students to less feminized professions in aeronautics is the objective that the “Women in Aviation International” association has set itself.

Throughout the morning, the young schoolgirls were able to see thanks to several speakers that many careers in aviation were not reserved for men but accessible to women, as evidenced by the participants who animated the various stands. Enough to hopefully arouse some future vocations and break down received ideas.

The young trainees had the chance to meet Kristina Tervo, a seasoned corporate aviation pilot, practice flight simulators, learn to read a map, use a drone or learn about the job of ramp agent. When a plane has to take off or land, it must ensure the safety and smooth running of all operations. He performs different tasks like helping to park the plane on the parking areas. He must also ensure the rapid loading and unloading of luggage or goods.

The icing on the cake, during this enriching morning from all points of view, the students had the opportunity to watch the take-off of two US Marine Corps Bell MV-22 Osprey military aircraft as part of the exercise Caribbean 2022. Did you say impressive?

Kelly Murphy, director of communications for "Women in Aviation International", Ludmilla Cuzenard, manager of HeliRiviera Caraïbes and executive responsible for HeliRiviera Flight Academy (flying school at Grand-Case airport), Ludmila de Weever, member of parliament of Sint Maarten and Sabrina Charville, quality manager at Grand-Case airport, had a big smile after the success of this event intended to create vocations among young schoolgirls. Too bad the Soualiga college was conspicuous by its absence.

The share of women in the aeronautics industry has increased over the past ten years, in a sector that offers great prospects, thanks to companies that are committed and actions that help deconstruct stereotypes. _AF
