Environment: Media action to combat single-use plastics

0

Today, Wednesday, three Sint Maarten radio stations are coming together to offer an event on sustainable development that concerns the entire island. This operation is carried out in support of the call for action launched by Green Initiatives against single-use plastics. The objective is to raise awareness of sustainable development and show that the population is in favor of a ban on single-use plastics, by proposing solutions already existing on the island.

Green Initiatives is a collective created in January 2019, and composed of companies and non-profit associations that respect the environment on both parts of the island. The association aims to tackle, on a completely voluntary basis, the most important problems linked to sustainable development on the island. The three radios, Prime Time SXM, which broadcasts on the Internet, My88.3 FM, and Island92 on the frequencies 91,9 FM and 105.1 FM, offer a live talk show entitled "Green Stream". During  This program explains the economic, environmental and societal reasons for which it is necessary to eliminate single-use plastics from the island, while presenting the existing solutions to replace single-use plastics on the territory.

The show takes place at the Lagoonies Bar & Bistro, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and listeners are invited to come and give their opinion. This event is also a way to advance the call to action against single-use plastics, which now has nearly 6 signatures, with the goal of reaching 000 by December 10, 000.

The Green Initiatives collective considers that it is high time that the island's policies adopt and apply legislation against single-use plastics. The island is the last "red dot" in the Caribbean regarding the signing and implementation of such a ban. The petition can be viewed at www.change.org/p/less-plastic-more-sxm.
