Environment / Saint-Martin walks for the climate

0

For the past few weeks, we have been seeing calls to citizen awakening everywhere in the world. It was within this framework that a "citizen movement" was born. We followed the first organized climate march led by a young woman, Eve.

Eve is 24 years old and lives in Saint-Martin. She has just married and wants to start a family. She does not imagine being able to give birth to small lives without committing to the future, to offer them a world in which they would not have to fight for water or food.

Does this vision shock you? Does that sound like an exaggeration? At first glance, we can say that the world is struck by a panic attack which spreads like a virus through social networks. And yet, the latest report from the IPCC, an intergovernmental group of scientists, is alarming and many public figures appeal to common sense in politics and to citizen awareness. In the past, this grouping has been wrong many times. It must be said that this is a group of scientists led by public policies, elected officials. Their independence is debated and many independent scientists have criticized their methods, their calculation model and even the way, sometimes singular, of transcribing their results.

The converging beam

In reality, the release of this new IPCC report is not the only voice that has been raised recently. It is the one we hear very loudly, but the concern is beautiful and is present in a large part of the world scientific community. And this is what alarms the most. Today, rising temperatures are back on the carpet and there is consensus on this. When we talk about rising temperatures, we mean it on a global scale. It is the global temperature of the planet. And here is where the two big problems that concern us lie.

First, climatology is based on models to predict what will happen, and a calculation model is created based on data from the past. Today, we are heading straight for an unknown area.

The planet has never experienced such a rise and we can not rely on anything to predict the future. Then, as we did not work in the right direction during the decades when we had the time, today, we do not really know which are the most effective levers in an emergency. And then, the global emergency and the human emergency are two very different things. It is humanity that no longer has the time to procrastinate.

The power of citizen awakening

As an ordinary citizen what power do we have? If the world experiences such an emergency, what can we do? We are told of a decade to reverse the machine… A decade is short, very short on both scales. On a human scale, we have little time left and on a global scale, just the time of a breath. This is where the citizen movement comes into its own. So what is this extraordinary power that we have and that we do not use? That of the ballot boxes? Yes, but not only this one. Voting is only a small part of our power. The most effective is the power we have to influence public policies and even to make them, to stimulate them. The gathering of citizens who organize themselves to launch actions from the territory is essential to orient policy. Once the movement is launched and spread, governments have no choice but to follow. We cannot restrain a movement that involves thousands, even millions of people because these people are voters ... This is why this march for the climate made sense. They were not very numerous. A few dozen people gathered Saturday morning in front of the prefecture to show their desire to be conscious actors at last. But the process does not stop there. Eve has created a facebook group on which you are called to share your ideas and initiatives. The idea being, of course, to create a common dynamic and actions that make sense for the territory. Strength in numbers… _NB
