Environment: The executive council issues a favorable opinion on the creation of an Educational Marine Area in Grand-Case

0

Born in 2012 in the Marquesas Islands, the Marine Educational Areas (AME) allow students and their teacher to manage a small coastal maritime area in a participatory manner. This educational and eco-citizen approach aims to make young people aware of the protection of the marine environment but also to discover its actors.

By investing in a small coastal maritime area for which they will orchestrate the participatory management, the students develop with their teacher a project for knowledge and protection of the coastal and marine environment.

This approach is carried out in direct contact with the players in these environments: – fishermen and other sea trades,

– local authorities,

- scientists,

– associations of users and the environment, etc.

Referents, most often from associations, support the teacher on field trips, the discovery of the marine environment and its actors, the link with the territory.

On the program for the students: the establishment of a children's council for the sea, the realization of an inventory of the site, the acquisition of knowledge, the reflection around the stakes and the objectives of their marine educational area, the implementation of actions.

The process of creating an Educational Marine Area, initiated by the private school Happy School, a bilingual nursery and primary school, is supervised by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB). It can lead to an “AME” label. This approach incorporates the need for the applicant to obtain an agreement from the Collectivity, which is the subject of this deliberation.

The AMEs are based on compliance with an AME methodology and an AME charter, which aim to implement the three pillars of these areas:

– Develop the eco-citizenship of the youngest and education for sustainable development, through a participatory approach to the management of a common good.

– Strengthen the preservation of natural marine and coastal environments through the mobilization of schools and local actors.

– Create territorial synergies between users, educational community and actors of coastal and marine areas to bring out a new balanced relationship between society  and environment through sustainable development.

Meeting on October 13, the executive council  has decided to give a favorable opinion on the creation of an Educational Marine Area in Grand-Case, a project carried out, it should be remembered, by the Happy School nursery and primary school. _AF
