Environment: The earth trembled at SXM before the arrival of Santa Claus!

The earth shook at 11:12 a.m. on Sunday and the shock was felt in Saint-Martin. An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on the open Richter scale has indeed shaken the Northern Islands. What caused a certain fright at the inhabitants of the various districts of the island.

According to the data collected, the epicenter was off Saint Kitts and Nevis, more precisely 103 kilometers north of Basseterre, the island's capital, 163 kilometers northwest of Antigua and Barbuda and 261 kilometers to the northwest of our archipelago and 68 kilometers deep.

The phenomenon was widely felt in Grande-Terre, but also in part of Basse-Terre.

But it is especially the Northern Islands which had the most striking effects of this earthquake, recorded 20 kilometers north of Gustavia, in Saint-Barthélemy and 27 kilometers from Marigot.

This earthquake was able to generate, in the closest affected areas, an average ground acceleration of 13 mg, corresponding to a macroseismic intensity IV − V (widely felt). Depending on the type of soil, the intensities may however have locally reached intensity VI (potential slight damage).
