Also as part of their official visit, the representatives of the Fondation de France (FDF) met with the managers of the Saint Martin Nature Reserve for a working meeting and presentation of their new rehabilitation project.
This ambitious socio-economic and environmental plan concerns, among other things, the rehabilitation of a wetland impacted by the passage of Hurricane Irma, for the appropriation by the public of the issues related to the natural heritage and biodiversity of Saint- Martin. It will also be a question of highlighting the nursery for a re-vegetation of the littoral, and more precisely of a nursery of mangrove trees, with recourse to pilings, ensuring the access to the nursery and reinforcing the integration of the existing ecological rehabilitation tool. Finally, there will be added, for the public and schoolchildren, the establishment of a path for discovering and raising awareness of the rehabilitated wetland by means of facilities allowing the channeling of frequentation by limiting its impact on the environment while providing awareness signage. The coastal areas, including the mangroves of Saint Martin, were severely impacted by cyclone Irma in September 2017. The main purpose of this nursery of pre-grown mangrove plants is to relocate this ravaged area with a view to accelerating the natural resilience of coastal vegetation. The Nature Reserve presented its intentions to the Fondation de France during a working meeting and a site visit. The FDF will finance the project to the tune of 181.000 euros out of a total budget of 200.000 euros. The said project, still awaiting authorization from the Community, is part of a process of appropriation of this component of the landscape and ecological identity by the local population. It is also a driver of economic activities linked to tourist numbers. It responds to a lack of means of reception and playful and educational awareness, as it existed before the passage of cyclone Irma. _VX
