ENVIRONMENT: The fight against Sargassum continues

0

As announced in September 2022, the projects initiated by the Collectivity and the Prefecture concerning the collection of Sargassum and the implementation of systems to combat mass groundings are underway.

As of October 21, the collection of algae had resumed at Cul-de-Sac as planned by the Collectivité, in order to clean the bay and dissipate the still persistent odors that emanate from the gases produced by the sargassum. Until January 10, 2023, the Janky company is mandated to carry out the said collection work. The services of the Collectivity concerned by this dossier have selected a consulting firm to support the Anti-Sargassum Collective in drafting the specifications relating to the new Sargassum collection market and the markets for the implementation of the Sargassum 2023 action, namely gas detector, surveillance camera, experimental nets, operating vehicles and design study for the requalification of the coastline of Cul-de-Sac bay. Three work sessions had already been carried out at the end of last month. The objective is to publish the calls for competition relating to these markets by mid-December. The installation of a temporary dam on Cul-de-Sac is also part of the projects to avoid a significant new arrival of sargassum in the bay. The Community is planning a collection of algae this weekend with possible storage at the bottom of the car park given the persistent low volumes, a solution which must remain in the short term given the considerable olfactory nuisances that this can cause for the inhabitants, not to mention the accelerated deterioration. electrical equipment in nearby accommodation. If the clean-up work was productive on the large volumes, small patches of Sargassum are still present in the bay of Cul-de-Sac and the beaches of Mont Vernon and Orient Bay are still dotted with it. To be continued. _VX
