Environment: The clean-up campaign is extended until July 15

The cleaning campaign launched by the Community on May 10, initially until June 10, is extended until July 15, 2018.

As a reminder, the objective is to carry out a major cleaning of the island and to remove a maximum of waste, some of which could become projectiles in the event of bad weather, for the cyclonic season which has just started.

The population is invited to clean private properties while the community will continue the cleaning work on the public domain. Neighborhood associations are also invited to help with this operation.

Access to the Grandes Cayes ecosite (Cul de Sac) is free for the duration of the cleaning campaign, only for vehicles registered on the French side and for adapted trucks (fitted with a dumping bucket) . It is also possible to deposit waste free of charge at the Galisbay recycling center.

In recent days, the Collectivity has completed the number of large waste collection bins with five additional bins, three of which will be in rotation according to the demands of the population. There are therefore now 29 skips on the whole territory.

People wishing to have a skip near their home for 2/3 days can contact the Community Environment Department on 0590 52 27 30.

In addition, the Collectivity plans to start cleaning the gullies and the hydraulic system joining the Grand Case ponds before the end of June. The first step is to remove the main debris and then proceed to conventional mechanical cleaning. The five priority gullies are those of Colombier, Pic Paradis, Belle Plaine, Spring (Marigot) and Concordia.

During the press conference on Tuesday, June 5 on the preparation of the cyclone season, the services of the Community gave an update on the excavations carried out between September 2017 and April 2018: 78 tonnes of waste were deposited at the eco site including 000 by COM and 67 by professionals. The large temporary storage built up after Irma represented between 000 and 10 tonnes. For the month of May, 900 tonnes of waste were transported to the eco-site including sargassum.

As for the COM buildings damaged by the cyclones and not yet cleared, a demolition contract is underway and will be implemented by the end of the month for part of them, another part will be deconstructed and the rest will be secured. The delay is due to the diagnoses that had to be established upstream.
