ENVIRONMENT: 140 shipwrecks being removed

0

The site for the removal of out-of-service boats partly sunk in the French part has begun. It was officially launched Monday by the president of the Collectivity Louis Mussington and Frantz Gumbs. A total of 140 wrecks will be removed from the waters; they were identified by the sea management services in 2018.

Koole Constructor, a company selected by the COM, has installed its equipment at Sandy Ground on the lagoon side. It has a barge, several mechanical devices and skips for storing waste. It also built a concrete slab on which the boats are dismantled, in order to avoid the risk of pollution in the ground and the lagoon.

First, the teams listed the wrecks and numbered them. Then they empty the boats of their fuel and other polluting waste before taking them out of the water. The wrecks are removed one by one and then taken to the site. There, they are dismantled and the waste is sorted according to its nature (wood, plastic, etc.). They were crushed and placed in dumpsters which will be transported to the ecosite which will ensure their revaluation.

The company has brought in some of its workforce from Europe and is in the process of recruiting between four and six young people from Sandy Ground through the local Mission.

Koole estimates that he can process an average of two wrecks per day; the rate depending on their condition. Completion of the project is scheduled for the end of the year.

This project represents a cost of some 5,11 million euros excluding tax, 85% financed by Europe, the State and the Community (440 euros).  (soualigapost.com)
