The Prime Minister of Sint Maarten Marcel Gumbs spoke last Wednesday as part of the "Emancipation Day" celebrations at Emilio Wilson park. "One of the common points between the end of slavery and the new status of Sint Maarten is that these two events arose from calls from people on this island who wanted to be released," said Gumbs, during his speech. The day was punctuated by numerous cultural events in the park. This holiday is celebrated every year on July 1, to mark the abolition of slavery in 1863 on the island by the Netherlands.
