2022 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: What are the major issues in Overseas France?

0

Expensive life, unemployment, inequalities, security, environment, the Overseas Territories face many challenges. To which are added issues specific to each territory.

The majority of candidates for the presidential election have a section devoted to the Overseas Territories in their programme. The overseas territories have a real weight with nearly two million voters. They represent 4% of the electorate.

The high cost of living, a common feature

In the current context of generalized inflation, the “cost of living”, in other words purchasing power, remains a concern for voters. The raw materials are constantly increasing. In Overseas France, remoteness, dock dues which tax imports and the indexation of civil service salaries increase the bill.

 Socio-economic inequalities

The standard of living is lower in the Overseas Territories than in France, especially in Guyana and Mayotte. The poverty rate is high there. Unemployment is also a problem: some overseas local authorities are affected by record rates. It particularly affects women and young people.

 insecurity

Overseas territories are also more exposed to violent crimes. Homicides are higher there than in France as well as offenses with weapons. Road mortality remains worrying: the rate per million inhabitants according to age group can triple compared to that observed in France.

 The environment, a crucial issue

The wealth of biodiversity in the Overseas Territories is incomparable. Thanks to its overseas territories, France is present in four of the five oceans of our planet, which makes it the second largest maritime area in the world. These territories are home to exceptional fauna and flora on their soil and in their waters. 80% of French biodiversity is concentrated there, but it is in danger.
