Education / Back to school: “a significant drop” in the number of students

"In terms of numbers, we could have expected a collapse, but this is not the case" said the rector of the academy of Guadeloupe Mostafa Fourar Wednesday August 29 at the end of a meeting at the CCI of Saint-Martin with school heads and school directors.

No collapse, therefore, but a "significant drop" in the number of students enrolled in public schools in Saint Martin this year. They will be around 7200 in total, nearly 3600 in the first degree and 3600 in the second. This corresponds to a drop of 20% in the first degree and 10% in the second, compared to the workforce planned for the 2017-2018 school year.

The national education services were prepared for it since they had envisaged the return of only 90% of the students. "After Irma, on November 6, we had recovered 65% of the numbers planned for the 2017-2018 school year, then 85% in January" added Michel Sanz, the IA-DAASEN of the national education services of Saint-Barthélemy. and Saint-Martin.

"So there will be no opening or closing of classes, but perhaps adaptations," said Mostafa Fourar.

As for teachers, "the academy remains attractive with more arrivals than departures" added the rector. There will then be more regular teachers than contractors this year. “We weren't expecting it,” he said. Michel Sanz also confirms what he had already said before the summer holidays: "there were no more requests for transfers (to leave Saint-Martin, editor's note) than usual".

The teachers' pre-school year is scheduled for Monday, September 3, 2018, and that of the students the next day.
