Education: Almost half of Sint Maarten's students do not feel safe at school

Among the pupils of Sint Maarten, 46% of them indicated that they did not feel safe at school. Feelings of insecurity are mainly caused by violence and harassment of young people. This is the result of an online survey conducted by the Lions Club of Sint Maarten among 316 children attending school in several establishments.

The Lionistic Year July 2019-June 2020 was celebrated as “Year of Youth” under the theme “Our Children / Our Future”. Given the increase in violent incidents among the school population at the time, the former president of the Lion, Oralie Boirard and the local Lions Club undertook, as a flagship project, the organization of a forum to provide schoolchildren a platform to identify their priorities and provide solutions.

The first phase of this initiative was to launch an online survey which encouraged young people to participate in sharing their daily life experiences and expressing general feelings about their problems. The survey was developed around the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and served to assess knowledge about their rights and protections.

The survey was conducted from February 24 to March 15, 2020 and targeted young people aged 11 to 19. Students were allowed to take the survey during school hours.

Due to the restrictive measures in place related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Forum originally scheduled for May 2020 has been postponed and plans are in place to host a virtual roundtable in the first quarter of 2021.

The Lions Club said it is committed to sharing a summary of the survey results with stakeholders, participating schools and the general public. A full view of the survey results is available at http://bit.ly/lionssxmyouthsurvey2019.

The Lions Club Youth and Education Committee created the survey in cooperation with youth survey developer Iris Hakkens, parents, school boards and principals, the host of the l PJD2-FM 102.7 Wendell Moore, Philipsburg Broadcasting and Teen Times.

This project is part of the celebration of the 50th  anniversary of the Lions Club of Sint Maarten for 2020-2021 under the theme “50 years of dedicated service and commitment to our community”.

The Lions Club celebrated its 50th anniversary on December 12, 2020. _AF
