EDUCATION: Parents' first coffee break at Elie Gibs school

0

In order to strengthen cooperation between those involved in parenting support and the parents of pupils, a "coffee break for parents" was organized at the Elie Gibs elementary school in Grand-Case on Monday 6 February.

Launched by Maryse Jean-Baptiste, ULIS coordinating teacher at the Elie Gibs school, and supported by Yannick Catanese, director of the school, this information action followed the results obtained during a survey of the parents of students with special educational needs. The general objective of this time of exchanges between parents and specialized establishments, the theme of which was the success of pupils in difficulty through specialized assistance, was to carry out a diagnosis with the parents of schoolchildren to find out their perceptions of the schooling of pupils with special educational needs, their opinions and expectations in terms of support. The results of the survey carried out online from December 1 to 16, 2022 on a sample of 20 parents of children aged 6 to 7 underline the importance of raising parents' awareness in view of their lack of knowledge of the systems put in place. Fourteen questions were asked to the parents as to the types of difficulties encountered by the child. 62,5% of respondents answered reading, 18,8% written or oral expression and 6,3% understanding the text. With a majority of pupils suffering from attention disorders (50%), memory disorders and dyslexia come in second and third positions with 18,8% respectively. More than half of the pupils do not benefit from professional support (7 against 9), which coincides with the fact that 9 respondents out of 15 do not know what a school support plan is. Same observation for knowledge of the function of a speech therapist, 9 out of 16 parents are unaware of this profession which prevents, identifies and treats voice, speech and language disorders in children, and also adults. To date, only 5 speech therapists officiate on the French part of the island while the demand would require a dozen. The results are also alarming regarding the understanding of psychomotricity which works on various disorders such as lack of coordination, difficulties in location in space, nervous tics and motor clumsiness. The psychomotrician makes it possible to become aware of his body in order to better control it thanks to educational and playful games: 13 parents out of 16 do not know the usefulness of it. As for the devices (AESH, RASED, ULIS, SESSAD, CMP), the survey reveals that the vast majority of parents have little control over them. This first coffee break at the Elie Gibs school allowed them to discover, learn about and meet the childhood professionals who hide behind these support structures: psychomotor therapist, speech therapist, specialist educator, psychologist and mediator. school, social worker, etc. The coffee break, open to all parents, regardless of the student's school, took place in a real conviviality with the children's well-being in mind. _VX
