On the side of France

On the Saint Martin side, it is sometimes feared that the island will only be known through the prism of crime or drugs. We also know what metropolitan people on vacation say and love about Saint-Martin. However, on the metropolitan side, tourism in the Antilles remains an exception. What does this evoke for the inhabitants of France?

To find out, we met Laure, Anne and Brigitte, town hall staff, and Jacques, doctor and farmer.

Laure “The West Indies, the name makes you dream. It evokes holidays, banana trees, exoticism… it surprises me that you speak of delinquency, it's the last thing on my mind! Saint-Martin is rather a very small colorful island near Martinique. The name speaks to me more when you associate it with Saint-Barthélemy. ”

Brigitte "Saint-Barthélemy? In fact, that doesn't mean anything to me, unless we say Saint-Barth! ”

Anne “It's a place where we would like to spend our holidays. But there is the price and the duration of the flight… And even if it means going to the Antilles, I have a preference for the greater Antilles. Although… perhaps out of ignorance! ”

Jacques “I have never heard of Saint Martin except recently. Saint-Barth is better known. I have children of patients who went to try their luck there after their high school, a long time ago. If I were young, I would find it great to discover Saint-Martin, the cultures that mix with it, the energy of the Antilles! ” _HM
