Daniel Gibbs vs. the State: “when you look for me, you find me!”

"When they look for me, they find me," said Daniel Gibbs in plenary session of the territorial council on Friday morning. And in recent days, the state has found it. The president of the community does not accept one of the recent decisions of the government, that of not paying 25 million euros, a sum yet promised.

After the passage of Irma, the Prime Minister had announced during his visit to Saint-Martin on November 6, 2017 that the State will compensate for the shortfall in terms of tax revenue of the Community to ensure the functioning of it. The estimated sum was 62 million, 12 million in 2017 and 50 million in 2018. This was noted during the protocol signed at the end of November 2017 between the State and the Collectivity in Paris.

If the 12 million were paid in 2017, it is not the same for the other 50 million. “We first changed the rules. We were told that in fact this sum will be divided and paid in four installments, ”comments Daniel Gibbs. Also 25 million euros were paid in September for the first two quarters of the year. And recently, the State announced to the COM that, ultimately, it will not touch the remaining 25 million on the grounds that it “had a substantial cash flow” in December 2017. In other words, it does not need money from the state. “But it was cash! It was intended to pay suppliers, expenses incurred! », Explains the president of the COM.
