Culture: Three commemorative days of Saint-Martin's Day organized at the Lycée Professionnel Daniella Jeffry

0

At the initiative of Laurence Vallette and Elisabeth Chamodon, three days commemorating Saint-Martin's Day were organized with students from the Lycée Professionnel Daniella Jeffry.

This festival, every November 11, is an opportunity to evoke the history and culture of our island, often little or little known.

So, why not take advantage of this festive moment to contextualize the History teachings of the Seconde program?

Indeed, the organization of educational activities (outings and conferences) was, this year, intended for three classes in the European section, the Secondary “Catering and Hotel Trades” and “Customer Relations Trades”.

The idea came to us while reflecting on the contextualization of our 1st sequence of History: "The expansion of the known world (XVth-XVIIIth)" and, more precisely the discovery of the island by Christopher Columbus who gave it its name. probably in 1493, on Saint-Martin's Day.

Also, this project meets several educational objectives:

- Interactive learning for our students to make them aware of the culture of our territory and the desire to learn;

- An integration of multilingualism (French, English and Spanish) to open them towards horizons extended to the rest of the world;

- The acquisition of knowledge to help them build their own Caribbean identity and feel valued;

- Class cohesion for these newcomers to the Lycée Professionnel around a stimulating project.

  Thus, we wanted them to be the actors of their training, especially during the two educational outings who opened this period Monday, November 8 in the morning and for which they had to carry out research:

A hike to Mont des Accords then to Spring, on the heights of Concordia for which the students of Seconde MRC 1 and 2 worked on the presentation of the Spring sugar factory and the Treaty of Concordia of 1648. They presented the two historic places, like a tourist guide , in French and Spanish. These remarkable sites recall the economic and political past of the island.

A cultural tour to Fort Louis then to several points of interest in Marigot for which the Second MRH students worked on the itinerary and acted as tourist guides for their accompanying teachers, in French, English and Spanish. At the fort, they also participated in a treasure hunt to find the copy of a XNUMXth century parchment (made according to the original), taken from the logbook of Christopher Columbus where the discovery of the island of Saint Martin is mentioned.

Then, Tuesday, November 9, the three classes participated in a 2h conference, moderated by Mr. Franz Gumbs, in French, on the political, economic and cultural history of Saint Martin, in the post-Colombian period.

Wednesday November 10 Mr. Jay Haviser, archaeologist from the Dutch part spoke in English on the pre-Columbian history of the Antillean Arc, then of our island.

Our two passionate speakers were able to keep our students in suspense throughout their highly documented services. We had only good feedback from both the students and those of you who were able to attend. Moreover, our students will have the opportunity to reuse this knowledge during the History program throughout the year. Indeed, St Martin is at the heart of this period rich in events between the XNUMXth and the XNUMXth century and of which our students are the proud heirs.

This is why, thanks to the enthusiasm of each of you and of our students, we wish to renew this project annually by following the chronology of the History program of the grade 2022 class in 2023 until Terminale in XNUMX.

We will certainly be asking you in a few months and thank you for your support and participation.
