The cost of freight in Overseas has indeed multiplied by "two or three" because of the coronavirus crisis which has limited air links, acknowledged Tuesday the Minister of Overseas, Annick Girardin, in front of the deputies, in evoking a "reopening" of overseas territories "beyond June".

The health crisis “has indeed an influence, a consequence on the costs of national and international air freight. The price has been multiplied by two or even three times ”.

The cause: “Quite simply because in normal times, 60% of air freight is financed by the price of passenger tickets. But today airlines have lost 90% of their passengers, on the whole of our planet, ”she continued.

The overseas territories are also affected by the pandemic, but to a lesser extent, and to protect them, "since March 23, we have decided to limit flights" to these destinations, "or even to eliminate them in certain cases, such as Mayotte, where we are crossing with an airlift from Reunion, ”recalled the Minister.
 Price increase

“There have been price implications. We go from 4 to 5 euros per kilo (of freight, editor's note), to 10 to 12 euros per kilo today, "said Annick Girardin, who acknowledged that the government" knew that there would be an impact when we decided to limit thefts (…) but the priority was health ”.
"We are also working on an aid, and we are working especially beyond the month of June, on a reopening of overseas territories," she said, without further clarification.
