The number of coronavirus contamination has increased significantly in recent days and raises fears of a return of the epidemic to the territory.

In a few days, 34 additional cases were recorded by the health authorities of Sint Maarten, including 10 tests that came back positive on Thursday, July 23 alone. 34 new cases which are added to the two previous ones and therefore bring the number of active cases to 36 partly Dutch. A sudden increase which testifies to the strong circulation of the virus on our territory. The government of Sint Maarten made it clear that these were "mainly" indigenous cases as opposed to the three imported cases confirmed to be linked to the repatriation flight carried out from the Dominican Republic on July 22. The authorities specify that the active cases are the subject of increased surveillance and that the follow-up of the contact cases continues "in order to ensure to contain the virus as quickly as possible".

The government of Sint Maarten is also imploring residents and visitors to adhere to the barrier measures "in order to ensure that we can remain open for business," said the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Silveria Jacobs. It specifies that sanctions could be taken against companies that do not respect the health protocol in force.

• 3 cases in Saint-Martinand one in Saint-Barthélemy

Last Saturday, it was on social networks that the Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin released an update of the health report for the northern islands. In Saint-Martin, he reports two new indigenous cases and one imported case, all confined to homes. The island of Saint-Barthélemy, for its part, recorded a new imported case. The first for several weeks. For the authorities, the emergence of indigenous cases "means that there is a reservoir of virus in the territory". The Prefecture invites the population not to slack off in the application of barrier gestures.
