Commemoration in memory of the victims of the deportation

The Collectivity of Saint-Martin commemorated, Sunday, April 30, the national day of remembrance for the victims and heroes of the deportation.

Mrs. Préfète Anne Laubies, Mrs. Valérie Damaseau, First Vice-president of the community (who represented President Daniel Gibbes outside the territory), and the Senator of Saint-Martin, Mr. Guillaume Arnell, paid a solemn tribute to the victims of the deportation, by laying a wreath at the foot of the War Memorial of Saint-Martin. They were surrounded by members of the veterans association and the Standard bearers of Saint-Martin, territorial advisers and members of the Junior Territorial Council, represented by its president miss Chelsea Jhigaï.

Organized on the last Sunday in April because of its proximity to the anniversary of the liberation, this commemoration celebrates the memory of the victims of deportation to concentration camps during the Second World War. This Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to exercise our duty of remembrance and to sensitize the public, in particular the young generation, to the world of internment and deportation.
