Sofia Carti-Cordington, founder and vice-president of the association, and Calvin Bryan, president who has always worked for professional and social integration in the associative life of Saint-Martin, recalled during their speech the importance of an association such as SXM NINI in a territory like that of Saint-Martin where precariousness is raging. No papers, no social status, no retirement, no housing, no employment, no nothing… so many rights that the “NINI” do not have. Bernadette Davis, 2nd vice-president of the Collectivity and originally from Quartier d'Orléans, said she was honored to support the association. Coming especially from Guadeloupe, Carl Edouard Saint Remy of the Consul General of the Republic of Haiti, works in close collaboration with the SXM NINI association in order to regularize the situation of people of Haitian origin, offering beneficial flexibility to a process that can turn out to be as long as it is laborious. The SXM NINI association was created in August 2019 following an appointment in the prefecture of Sofia Carti-Cordington who went there accompanied by five "NINI". The prefect in office at the time strongly encouraged her to create an association in order to fall within the legal framework and to be able to help these people who suffer from great insecurity. These people who were born here but who live in hidden poverty without papers or knowledge of French law. The associative team hardly replaces the administration but offers support that makes it possible to "undo the knots that prevent these people from entering a legal framework", from working, paying their taxes, having social security coverage, in short , to have access to fundamental rights. With a real desire for recognition and integration of "NINI" within Saint-Martin society, the association works with these counterparts, several representatives were also present at the inauguration such as ACED, Saint-Martin Santé or the Compagnons Bâtisseurs. Anyone helped by the SXM NINI association helps in return, contributing to the integration of another marginalized person.
Past the age of 16, which is the age limit for compulsory education for all children, French and foreign, the regularization process is more complex. The files followed by the association are submitted to a committee made up of members. The new premises in Quartier d'Orléans will allow the team to continue this essential work in the fight against precariousness with a fixed place to receive people, too often plagued by shame, of which the association lists a hundred on our territory. . The hotlines of the SXM NINI association will be held every day, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 13 p.m.
