LOCAL CHARITABLE CRAFTS // SXM St Martin Gems: the art of sublimating fragments of glass washed up by the sea

0

These small fragments of glass washed up by the sea that can be found on several beaches in Saint-Martin have the particularity of having been naturally polished by mixing with the sand and impact with rocks or pebbles. It is on the beach of Grand-Case two years ago that Amy picked up her first treasures.

“I had already noticed these little bits of glass and heard about sea glass (Sea Glass) but that day, it particularly caught my attention given the quantity.

In one afternoon, I picked up a dozen. Every time we went for a swim, I collected a few and took them home. "

That winter, Amy made her very first piece of jewelry with one of these sea glasses and a leather string to give it to a friend who whispered to her about making more. Amy launches out as an autodidact and wears her creations, which triggers many positive and enthusiastic reactions when people who cross her path ask her about these singular and original jewels. Like the snowflake, no piece of glass is the same, each piece has a unique shape, a pure color and a polish that makes one imagine all the lives that this harmless little piece of glass could have had. Does it come from a bottle of champagne slashed to celebrate the birth of a child or a wedding? Of a bottle of beer raised to toast with found friends? From a bottle of water that sat in the center of a family table?

“I kept making adjustable necklaces and bracelets for friends until one of them suggested I sell some. It is true that it can be a nice memory, if some come to visit Saint-Martin and want to leave, taking a part of the island with them. On the other hand, if I started selling my creations, I absolutely wanted to give back to this island so dear to my heart. "

All profits made from sales of SXM St Martin Gems are donated to a Saint-Martin charity dedicated to orphans. Nothing is lost, everything is created, everything is transformed: a marine waste that becomes a gift, a gift that continues to give to Saint-Martin. Trash to Treasure. _VX
