Knife attack: the two defendants placed in pre-trial detention

The two individuals, THJ and YL, involved in the Monday morning knife attack, were presented to the Saint Martin Criminal Court last Wednesday under the procedure of immediate appearance.

They agreed to be tried in the presence of their respective counsel and did not want additional time to prepare their defense. On the other hand, the victim's lawyer, JB, hospitalized in the Dutch part since the facts, having been unable to speak with her, asked for the trial to be postponed. For its part, the court considered it necessary, given the vague circumstances of the incident, for the victim to be heard again because it could only be so briefly by the investigators due to his state of health. Although the defense opposed the removal, the court ordered it on May 7. In addition, according to the requisitions of the vice-prosecutor, the two defendants were placed in pre-trial detention. They were transferred this afternoon to prison in Guadeloupe where they will be tried.

According to the elements of the investigation, THJ and JB had a dispute in the Agrément district where they live concerning a rental car and in support of THJ, YL stabbed JB five times, puncturing him a lung and a kidney. The knife would belong to the victim. Instead of going directly to the hospital, JB preferred to join his sister who works in a business on the seafront in Marigot. And it was there when getting out of the vehicle that he was seen with the knife still stuck in the back. THJ was born in 1984 in Kingston but has lived in Saint Martin for several years. He is a masseur (not stated) in a restaurant on the beach in Grand-Case. YL was born in 1999 in Saint-Martin and is a mason (not declared). The victim is she from Sint Maarten where she resides.
