According to the Pôle Caraïbes airport in Pointe-à-Pitre, traffic to the Northern Islands fell by 10% in July and August compared to last year at the same time. 35000 passengers were registered against 39 last year. 000 people traveled in July and 17000 in August.

The frequency of flights operated by Air Caraibes and Air Antilles on this network, and the absence of travel restrictions, generated a less negative performance than the overall traffic trend; it is therefore possible to envisage "a faster return to normal on this beam than on the other destinations".

Demand for private flights on the rise

Since then, the resumption of aviation activity has been gradual. During the summer period of July-August, the airport handled 17145 passengers, or about 63% of the level reached during the same period in 2019.

This recovery was based in particular on the arrival of American tourists via San Juan airport: + 78% in July year-on-year, or 1013 arrivals. American tourists have indeed arrived from Puerto Rico because they cannot go through Juliana in Sint Maarten (-79%). Traffic from Pointe-à-Pitre also increased significantly over the period: + 37% to 4423 travelers.

At the same time, in this period of pandemic, demand for private flights has also increased significantly. Thus, in August, 331 passengers used it, an increase of 60% over one year.
