Reading difficulties: high rates in the West Indies

A recent study by the Ministry of Education shows that one in twenty young people is illiterate and one in ten has difficulty reading. The share of young people with reading difficulties is around 30% for Guadeloupe and Martinique. In the overseas territories, Mayotte holds the record with 73%, followed by Guyana with 48% and Reunion with almost 30%, according to the note from the Evaluation Department, foresight and performance (Depp). “Reading performance increases with the level of education. They are generally higher in girls than in boys ”, reveals this study which was based on tests carried out with participants in Defense and Citizenship Day (JDC) last year. _EH
