40th edition of the Heineken Regatta: Four days of regattas and intense parties!

The curtain fell on the 40th edition of the Sint Maarten Heineken Regatta last Sunday. Nearly 150 sailboats, including several multihulls, participated in four very intense days of racing. The X-402, Myxy, from Great Britain was named the best performing boat of this anniversary edition.

Sint Maarten Tourism Office Manager May Ling Chun awarded the Sint Maarten Cup to James Barker and the crew for dominating Group 5 of the Caribbean Sailing Association. Myxy led the first race with Absolute Properties, a J 30 from Antigua and won the other events. Numerous awards were given at the Regatta Village in Princess Port de Plaisance.

Director Chun also presented the Columbus Cup for Best Bareboat to Maguy-Baltics 1, winner of Bareboat 3.

 

• The results in the different categories:

  CSA Ocean Racing 1

"This year has been a very competitive race," said one of the founders of the regatta, Robbie Ferron. In the CSA Ocean Racing category, which included seven Volvo I Love Poland drivers, a Volvo 70 and Grace O'Malley finished the regatta level tied for points.

  CSA Ocean Racing 1

The French boat Palanad, a Class 40, started slowly with a second place in the first race and a third in the second. Palanad grabbed first place in the following four races to win the class.

  CSA Sportboat 1

Former St. Maarten Yacht Club commodore Ian Hop Ross took first place in CSA Sportboat 1 with his Melges 32 Kick 'em Jenny 2. Taz d'Antigua finished second.

  The CSA Waterboat 2

Team Island Water World, piloted by Frits Bus, also started the regatta slowly. The Melges 24 register three second places before competing in the last four races to win the class.

FKG with Andrea Scarabelli finished second and Island Water World 2, another Melges 24 finished third.

  CSA 1

Fra Diavolo, an Italian-flagged Mylius 60, won the CSA 1. Umiko, a Swan 80, from Great Britain, finished second.

  CSA 2

Scarlet Oyster started the regatta with the first three places. Ross Applebey's Oyster 48 then placed third, second, first and finally second to win the class with a single point advantage. Duantless, a Beneteau First 47.7 finished second.

  CSA 3

Spike, a J111 and Liquid, a J 122 finished the regatta on equal points in CSA 3. Touch2Play Racing finished third.

  CSA 4

Solstice, the J 105 from the United States won CSA 4. Solstice also started slowly with second and fourth places.

The crew of Jordan Mindich then chained up three first and two second places for the victory. Sang Neuf, a J 109, finished second and one point behind the third, Maelia CERAC Antilles.

  CSA 5

Myxy won the CSA 5. Avanti Hanse 43 from the United States finished second.

  Multihull 1

Arawak won multihull 1 by a single point. Second place went to Ineffable, a Rapido 60 trimaran.

The class speech was the French trimaran Ultim 'Emotion 2. Antoine Rabaste's speedster flew over the island in less than 2 hours 45 minutes 48 seconds to finish with almost 50 minutes ahead of everyone.

  Multihull 2

Ian Martin on his Leopard 45, Spellbound, won top honors in class 2 multihulls. The Leopard 50 La Novia finished second.

  Bareboat 1

Eric Stallings sailing Kadans-Heinefish won Bareboat 1 on an SO 509.

  Bareboat 2

Duco Kriele on Safran-Noor (d) Mannen an OC 46 won the Bareboat 2 with only one point ahead of single point Maxim Nemchenko at Ananda SO 46.

  Bareboat 3

Christian Heinritz on Maguy, an OC 45 made an almost perfect regatta. The team won five first places and a second. Former St. Yarten Yacht Club commodore Tom Pas raced on an OC 45, Tonic III, and placed 13th in the class.

  Bareboat 4

Dmytro Pototskyi on a Sun Odyssey 519 won Bareboat 4 with first four places  and two seconds.

  Island Time

Jason Calianos won the Island Time, also known as the Fun Class. On board a Bavaria Cruiser 45, Parceira, the team brilliantly managed the different regattas.

Norbert Hoessermann on a Hanse 470 finished second. Robbie Ferron on Bunglebird, a Nonsuch 33 finished fourth.

  12 meters

Three 12 meters also competed in their own class. Stars and Stripes took first place and was followed by Canada II and True North IV.  _AF
